Benzo, The Tapes, Laton 2004.On Benzo’s couch: Therapy sessions fit for theater and clubsFrom Moscow, with love: The Tapes, the debut CD of the extraordinary Lithuanian acoustical explorer Richardas Norvila, alias Benzo, has just been released under the Austrian Laton label. The music on the CD really gets under your skin, perhaps because Benzo makes his living as a psychotherapist. He reveals a streak of social activism in this music project, playing only on demolished Russian electronic instruments, most of which are also in need of therapy, i.e. repair. PhD Norvila has been navigating since 1994 between extensive lecturing on musical theater and clubbing dates as a producer and DJ. On his acoustical instruments, he conjures up the vastness of the country (Around the Campfire), incorporating extended and complex beat sequences that transform even an urban Moloch into a disco dancer. Benzo’s music translates the lively multiethnic diversity of Moscow into sound images. |
