c.o.d.e – the third CD-project of the young viennese label Handsemmel Records is dedicated to the music of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy, two american jazz greats of the 60ties.

Eric Dolphy, who played saxophone, flute and clarinet but above all bass clarinet and established this instrument for jazz music, is an important pathfinder for avant-garde jazz. Ornette Coleman, saxophone player and composer, is considered to be a pioneer of free jazz. Eric Dolphy took even part on Coleman’s best known album “Free Jazz”.
The contributors of the third project of Handsemmel Records are also partly from US. Ken Vandermark from Chicago will play tenor saxophone and bass clarinet beside two Austrian musicians – Wolfgang Reisinger (drums), Max Nagl (alto saxophone) – and Clayton Thomas, who is currently situated in Berlin.
The new Handsemmel-CD continues the formerly path of the label: Musicians, who never before either recorded or have been heard together, provide a preset concept. They will choose the compositions together and each of them will make arrangements for the group. To intensify the compactness of the concept, the album will be orientated an the format of a vinyl: Less than one hour music and a virtual A- and B-side, and each will be dedicated to one of the famous musicians.
