Island No. 2Quick Change13 October 2008 - 25 October 2008 A piece of clothing longs for movement, to be put on and worn. A fashion show is not just a show, but it allows us to understand the covering and completes what – without the people who are wearing it – would otherwise remain a rather banal piece of material. With each piece of clothing a person also puts on their identity, their gender, the membership of a particular group and social class. All this that we are wearing on the body is an expression of the social space in which we move, and simultaneously creates this space, creates distance, status and hierarchy. But it is only movement and mimetic, gestural self-projection that definitively identify a person. In performance, fashionable clothing has long been under suspicion of being costuming. Coverings should be functional and neutral and retreat behind the body and its actual message, or however – remain performative props – in critical distance – no more. Clothes can be revealed and explained as social conjuring tricks. Each piece of clothing contributes to a mutual illusion with its opposite number, but we quite readily let ourselves in for the magic. We know that we are having the wool pulled over our eyes and suspend all disbelief. Are we left solely with the naked body as the vehicle of the authentic? The choreographer Anne Juren (A/F) and the cultural studies scholar and curator Brigitte Felderer-Lachmayer (A) locate the 14-day focus – which formally spans the range from performance, theory to screenings and installations – in this tension between reflected fashion design and social choreography.
